Compensation Package
A $198 million U.S. compensation package shows America's "Great Respect" for the Filipino World War II veterans who fought under the American flag against the Japanese forces. The package is thanking them for their bravery and service. Veterans have been campaigning for equal treatment of U.S. and Filipino service members who fought alongside eachother for over 60 years. The compensation package is part of the $787 billion economic stimulus measure that was signed into law Tuesday by President Barack Obama. The U.S Embassy in Manila said that it is going to start accepting applications for the payments next week. Claims by spouses, widows or children of veterans will not be accepted.

Am I correct in thinking that after 60 years, the US government is going to compensate Filipino soldiers but will not let their wives, widows or children apply for that compensation? How many soldiers were ther to begin with and how many are still alive? Seems like allowing at least spouses and widows to apply for that money would ease some of the travesty of the US government waiting six decades to do the right thing!
