Mr. Abunadi spoke of the Y2K bug to which he recalls people freaking out over the lack of technology. The thought made people think the world was going to end and made them crazy. He told me that people were stocking up on supplies to last them through the hard times that were to come which Mr. Abunadi thought was hilarious because on January 1st, 2000 life went on with the computers still up and running. “It was just another day” He said about the outcome of the New Year.
The Y2K bug was a global scare that put people in fear that all technology worldwide would shut down. Airplanes would rain from the sky, trains would collide, computers would black out, the stock market would crash and more tyranny would be caused by the failure of technology. Many company companies sold programs to prevent the Y2K bug in the years previous to the change of the millennium hoping to save the world. Out of fear people stocked up on necessities to get themselves and their loved ones through the failure. As many people partied welcoming the new millennium others hid away with copious amounts of supplies just to awake the next day to the same world they fell asleep to.

             Mr. Holstad, on a Tuesday morning in January of 1986, remembers like millions of others. The seemingly perfect NASA was trusted by everyone to safely transport 7 Americans to space and back. But within a minute of lifting off, the space craft’s now known flaw had caused an explosion. All seven of the crew had died.

            There was extensive media coverage of the catastrophe. Millions of people all over the world were shocked to see the first deaths in NASA history. With 10,000 people in attendance, a massive tribute was held for the fallen astronauts. President Reagan, on national Television, paid his own respect to the seven astronauts.

I asked Mr. Jennings what the first major world event that he remembered, and he said the Kennedy Inauguration. He remembered it being a major event and everyone was excited about it, it was the talk of the town.

On January 20, 1961 is when John F. Kennedy gave his inaugural speech. His speech focused on Foreign Policy.

The Moon Landing

Mr. Gsell only 12 years old remembers the moon landing which took place on July 20, 1969. He remembers being outside and looking up at the moon because he new that the Apollo 11 crew was about to land on the Moon. He thought that that was the coolest thing ever.

In President Kennedy's speech to Congress, on May 25, 1961, he expressed a concern that the United States was falling behind the Soviet Union in technology. So he challenged the nation to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. And on July 20, 1969 they did. Commander Neil Armstrong became the first man on the moon. He said the historic words, "One small step for man, and one giant leap for mankind."

Sitting in my living room, hoping I could watch Night Court (which came on after my bedtime), regular programming was interrupted for some people gathered in a city and were rushing over a wall. I was confused the people were dancing, chanting, and carting around massive amounts of Levi’s and boom boxes. Now I know the date and the event, it was November 11, 1989 and the fall of the Berlin Wall. The historic implications of this event were the weakening of the Soviet Union and the near end of the Cold War. The world, which had spent the last 40 some years rapt with communism versus capitalism, could breathe for a while and not fear nuclear holocaust. Two years latter my second grade teacher, Mr. Brown, jumped on the opportunity to travel to Russia (the former U.S.S.R.). He brought back with him stories of no toilet paper and toilets that couldn’t flush the paper even if it was available, as well as, nesting dolls.

In the 6th grade this is the most memorable thing before 9/11 that happened. I remember sitting in class watching a cnn news clip of how devastation it was. It made me cry seeing the pet stories of how people had to leave their animals behind. And all the damage that happened plus watching relief commercials of people just having the basics was just crushing.
