Wandering Above the Sea of Fog Caspar David Friedrich, 1818 This image was on the cover of one of the most influencing history books that I read in college, and it has made me think ever since. Who is this dude and where is he going? Is he traveling on the land or is he at the edge of the sea? How does he feel about his journey. Is it the beginning or the end of his journey, is he about to embark or is he looking back in reflection? Maybe he just got off of his horse at a scenic overlook to check things out. Is the theme of hope present in this image? Also, why are we in education so enamored by this image?

  1. 1. He looks like a rich guy going to explore the world.
    2. He is on land it's just really foggy.
    3. I think he is just about to begin his journey, and he's looking ahead thinking about all the things he is soon going to see and do.
    4. I think the theme of hope is present in this image.
    5. We are so enamored by this image because the reason a lot of people get educated is because they want to be able to get good jobs and make money and explore the world. People say that education throws open doors, and in this picture the world looks wide open and ready for the man to explore.
