Obese children outgrowing kids' clothing and furniture
According to data for Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 17% of children are obese. It has come to the point where pediatricians say that growth charts no longer apply to today's kids. Schools have had to buy larger furniture because the desks simply were not accommodating larger students. There are limited child safety seats for the number of obese young children. Aside from too-small furniture and child seats, children are more likely to get health problems that will carry on into adulthood like heart disease, diabetes and bone and joint problems. Clothing stores like Gap, Forever 21, and Old Navy have began to add plus-sized clothing lines for kids and teenagers.
Don't get me wrong, kids should be able to dress fashionable and have more choices in clothing, however the fact that society is having to change their market in order to increase their industry is a major health concern. How far is this going to go? Should we as a society continue to change our ways to accommodate obesity, or should we as a whole try to do something about it? We need to start encouraging healthy choices instead of surrounding ourselves with advertisements of fast food and vending machines everywhere we look.
