Big earthquake coming soon

Witter spoke last week about the latest in earthquake and tsunami studies -- it's Earthquake and Tsunami Awareness Month -- as part of state and local efforts to educate the public on preparing for a megaquake of magnitude 9 or more. Scientists are now in wide agreement that there's a 10 to 14 percent chance a powerful earthquake and tsunami will strike the Oregon coast in the next 50 years.

  1. An earthquake or tsunami will strike the Oregon Coast...in 50 years...yeah I'm not holding my breath for that one. Sure it may happen but 50 years is a huge perspective, anything can happen between now and then.

  2. Earthquakes happen often of the Oregon coast, but they are minor and we only hear about them if it's over 3.0 magnitude.

50 years does seem likely because alot can happen in that time.

  3. This seems like the "Global Climate Change" youtube video Mr. Craven did. I'll give the same comment as a citizen of the United States did on Mr. Cravens video clip. Though the percentages are low and the wait is a bit on the long side, the possibility of a huge catastrophy is quite fearful. But the way your portraying this, to me, is if we don't act on this knoledge we will be hit hard. Putting anything in a lifethreatening way is not quite viewed right. For example if i say that mutant hampsters will take over the world with the science we are discovering, people will freak out. Though they should with this kind of info, it's very unlikely and let alone absurd. With this in mind we probably won't act on it due to the fact that there are so many lifethreatening situations in the world. Acting on all of them, not knowing if their true or not, is just a waste of time and money.

  4. I dissagree with Julie completely. 50 years is within a reasonable perspective. we have seen what earthquakes and tsunamis can do and the devestation it can do to a town, city, or state. people dont realize how bad this could actually be, we need to be realizing that this is a pretty large epidenmic and do something about it.

  5. Now that we know, we should prepare. Keep a look out for possible signs of a tsunami, listen to the blaring siren warnings the quaking ground. Then look for higher grounds as soon as possible. Alot can happen in 50 years, and as mentioned here even a tsunami can, so be prepared

  6. 50 yrs seem reasonable cuz of the other tsunamis and earthquakes we hear about and have seen!

  7. well, the CNN says nothing about any posiblities of an earthquake on the oregon coast. I don't know that much about it, so I'll say that CNN might know just a little more about this then a hih school student, no offense. By the way, what are your sources?

  8. Its because of the Juan de Fuca Plate. (picture) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:JuandeFucasubduction.jpg

Its sliding under the North American plate in a subduction zone. After several hundred years of sliding and moving under the North American plate the Juan De Fuca plate reaches a point where it wont subduct any further so the plate will kick back out from underneath the north american plant, strighting out flat. Which will casue a Tsunami and or a major earthquake.

"The last major earthquake was the 1700 Cascadia earthquake, estimated to have a moment magnitude of 8.7 to 9.2. Based on carbon dating of local tsunami deposits, it occurred around 1700". As reported in National Geographic on December 8, 2003

Meaning that in all due time weather it is in 50 years or 200 another major earthquake is going to happen. Its better to prepare for this event because its inevitable.
